School Readers

Could You Help Kids Learn To Read?

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers in Northamptonshire to carry out this important role.

Reading time for many children at home and at school is often insufficient and one in four children are now leaving primary school unable to read to the required standard. This can have a lifelong consequence. No qualifications are necessary, just a good command of spoken and written English.

Schoolreaders is flexible and will match your availability to an appropriate, local school. Our volunteers find the scheme incredibly rewarding, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life chances.

School FSA Appeal

Woodford School FSA is appealing for support……

If you are able to help get in touch via Facebook: opens in a new window Woodford Halse School FSA on Facebook or search for @WoodfordFSA.

Dear parents and carers

The FSA recently met to agree how we’d approach the new year ahead of the AGM. However unfortunately at that meeting a number of the members have had to stand down.

We are now left with only three active members on the committee and we find ourselves in a position where the FSA can no longer continue.

The FSA has raised thousands of pounds over the years, we’ve funded white boards, equipment in the playground, trips to the Pantomime amongst many.

We have also put on events such as the Christmas Fayre and Santa Sleigh that are hugely popular with the whole community as well as film nights and school discos that are always popular with the children. All of this takes effort and many of the FSA have given up their time for many years and we feel now that new blood is required to take the FSA into a new period.

What do we need:

  • Deputy chair person
  • Secretary
  • Committee members (require 4)
  • Helpers

What would be required:

* Committee members:

o Available to do events throughout the year, some of us work full time but we need some who can help set up during the school day and can attend events after school (film nights etc.)

o Lead events, organising food, enough helpers, slips etc

o Bring fresh ideas and help invigorate the team

o Deputy chair/secretary – these are titles really; it just involves for example minute taking but are required by the charities commission.

o There will be help with all the above, you won’t be left to struggle, we just need people who want to get stuck in.

* Helpers:

o Able to where possible, assist with events such as film nights etc

o Help with cakes etc for events

o The more we have the more we can share the load

We really are at crunch time and we would be very sad to see the FSA disband but unless we can get a significant number of additional help then we will be forced to disband at the AGM.

The AGM will be at the school on the 27th Feb at 6pm.

More Cross Country News

Carl Barton, our PCSO, has passed on the following advice….

“Woodford Halse Primary school will be hoisting their annual cross country event on Wednesday 9th March from 4pm until 5.30pm. The event is county wide and will have around 600 children taking part this year.

“As you can imagine with the number of children attending this event, there have been issues with traffic in the past, mainly due to parents bringing their children to the event and parking their vehicles in the village.

“This year I intend to cone off some roads. The junction of Byfield Road and Scrivens Hill will be coned off.

“The school are expecting 7 coaches which will be parked at the Football Fields.

“Thank you in advance for your patience.”

Where were you in ’86?

Woodford’s Digital Domesday

As part of looking around the web for interesting things to do with Woodford, I came across the BBC’s Digital Domesday entry for Woodford Halse.

Domesday systemDo you remember this project to document every area of the UK on “laser disks”? If you were involved in contributing to the Woodford entry, maybe you never got to see what you provided (the computers and disk players were too expensive for many schools).

Well, about two years ago it was available on-line on the BBC’s web site.  The opens in a new windowWoodford entry can be accessed here. I’ve also added a link from the Woodford opens in a new windowhistory time-line page. If you don’t remember the Domesday project here’s a nostalgic look back to the “Tomorrow’s World”  programme that featured the project in November 1986: opens in a new windowHoward Stapleford & Maggie Philbin explain Domesday.
