Cafe Xmas 2020 Opening

From Diane Kenny….

Good morning and welcome to the Christmas countdown!

The cafe will close at 3pm on Saturday 19th December and re-open on Tuesday 12th January 2021 (god, viruses and government willing!)

Woodford’s New Cafe

I would like to take this chance to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us through what has been the strangest of years.

Personally, it has been one of the toughest and the love and support I received when Dad passed away was beautiful and humbling .

So until Saturday it is business as usual!

Thank you again and we wish you all a very merry Xmas and a peaceful and safe 2021!

Take care

Diane & The Team

Old School Cafe Re-opening

End of Lockdown II – December 2020

The Old School Café will re-open for sit down food from Wednesday December 2nd.

Woodford’s Old School Café

Diane is taking the opportunity below to remind everyone of the steps they are taking to ensure our safety in these COVID times. Please remember that only two families in the same bubble are allowed to sit together – and there is a maximum of six at a table.

As it is December, the cafe has an  Xmas menu again!

  • Christmas Pie (layers of sausage meat, cranberry & turkey) served with salad, cranberry sauce and hot bread roll
  • Xmas Panini – turkey, brie and cranberry all heated to yumminess and served with a salad!

Diane looks forward to seeing you – and, if you can, please book as it is looking as though they are going to be busy!

Things to Remember

As you are aware, things have changed with post lockdown Tier 2 regulations applying in Northamptonshire. Diane is taking this opportunity to update you on how they will be working for the foreseeable future. Sorry it is long, but she wants to assure you that they are doing everything they can to stay safe!

The café is still operating full table service – so you will be directed to a table and orders taken from there. Please let cafe staff seat you so that they can keep social distancing in place as best they can.

Tables have been relocated to ensure the one metre plus social distancing requirement is adhered to.

Booking Tables

You are able to book a table. This is recommended if you can. Call 07845 430577.

Social Distancing

There are restrictions on how many people can come together and the café will be enforcing this as they are required to do. “Indoor gatherings can only be two households in the same support bubble”. Tables seat a maximum of 6 persons to reduce the risk.

There is a one way system in and out of café – please follow the arrows accordingly.

Track and Trace

To comply with the track and trace requirement from Government, the café will be asking for your name and contact phone number – which they are obliged to keep for 21 days. The cafe also has a QR code so you can use the NHS app

Payment – is by card – debit or credit – and contactless where possible. The limit on contactless has been raised to £45 so should make it easier for everyone. Cash can be used if necessary.

Your placemats are your menus – these are laminated and can be cleaned after each sitting.

Can people looking for takeaways please order via phone 07845 430577 or Facebook (Menu & Order tab). Collection and payment will be via the café window in the car park.

Outdoor Seating

The garden area will be available (in good weather!) for those who prefer to sit outside, on a first come, first served basis.

As always, children are welcome. However, the café asks that they remain seated at all times whilst in the café to reduce the risk of compromising social distancing rules.

Cleaning & Covid Safety

The café has had to remove all books, newspapers and toys – so please feel free to bring your own if you wish.

Cleaning – there will be hand sanitiser available as you enter the café and you are encouraged  to use it. They will be cleaning door handles regularly and the card machine will be wiped after every contact use.

The café always cleans tables after every customer – however, if you see a table with a sign stating that it still needs cleaning, please do not sit there until this has been completed.

Crockery and cutlery is left at the table until customers have left – minimising contact. All tables and chairs will be cleaned between customers.

Condiments:  sugar, salt and pepper has been removed from the tables. These will be delivered with your drinks and meals – this also includes sauces etc.

Diane hopes you will bear with them and see that they are doing their best to keep everyone safe! They  look forward to welcoming you all back to the café soon

One More Business…

Sorry, but we left out one of the businesses that had asked to be included in the update of the Business Directory that we published yesterday.

We should have included….

SRB Editing Solutions, a local business providing freelance reading and writing services. These range from CV writing and editing, to copy and manuscript proofreading and editing, to ghost writing fiction and non-fiction.

If these services could benefit you or your business, please visit, or email

The updated directory is available here:- Business Directory.

Grants For Covid-19 Affected Businesses

Businesses Urged to Apply for New Grant Fund

wad of cashBusinesses in Daventry District which have been required to close temporarily due to the lockdown are encouraged to apply for a Local Restrictions Support Grant.

The Government fund can provide grants of up to £3,000 to help small businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors manage during the 28-day lockdown period.

The types of business covered includes non-essential retail, leisure, personal care (such as hairdressers and nail salons), entertainment, sports facilities and hospitality.

To be eligible to apply, businesses must occupy a property on which they pay business rates, and must have been open and trading on 4 November 2020. They must have been required to close for at least four weeks because of the national lockdown, or have adapted their business to offer takeaway or a ‘click and collect’ service.

Three levels of grants are available depending on the rateable value of the business:

  • For properties with a rateable value of £15,000 or under, grants will be £1,334 for the four weeks
  • For properties with a rateable value of more than £15,000 and below £51,000, grants will be £2,000 for the four weeks
  • For properties with a rateable value of £51,000 or over, grants will be £3,000 for the four weeks.

Daventry District Council is distributing the grant in the District and is urging eligible businesses to submit a claim as soon as they can.

Councillor Colin Morgan, Resource Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council said: “Local businesses are the lifeblood our communities and the local economy, and our staff have been working hard since the beginning of the pandemic to ensure they receive the Government funding support that they are entitled to.

“The fund offers vital support at this incredibly challenging time, and I would urge local businesses who think they might qualify to visit our website and apply online as soon as possible.”

To find out more information and submit an application online, please visit the Daventry Council Web Site LRSG

Please bring this to the attention of any business that you think might benefit.

drum roll

The cafe will be delivering in Woodford Halse between 10.30am and 2pm starting today (5th November).

There will be a few conditions with this; the main one being that payment must be made over the phone when ordering – we won’t be handling cash on delivery.

We are not going to charge for this service so that everyone will be able to use the cafe, so we ask for your understanding as we work through it all! The one thing that lockdown has done, is make us think of new ways to continue providing a service to our clients, so hopefully this is the start of things to come!

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you (one way or another!) through this time!

Collection & takeaway will operate as usual – you can order ahead by phone and facebook page or come to the “drive through” window to order and pay!

Grant Funding For Local Businesses

Small businesses urged to apply for Covid-19 support funds

Daventry District Council has announced the availability of grants for Covid-hit small businesses.

Small businesses in Daventry District are encouraged to apply for grants of up to £10,000 in the latest round of Government funding aimed at easing the impact of Covid-19.

Daventry District Council (DDC) is inviting small businesses that were not eligible for the Government’s other coronavirus support schemes to make applications to the new Discretionary Grant Fund.

The funding is aimed at businesses with under 50 employees that have seen a significant drop in income due to coronavirus, such as those in shared offices or other flexible workspaces, bed and breakfasts which pay Council Tax instead of Business Rates, some eligible charity properties and those who spend less than £51,000 a year renting or mortgaging a property.

The deadline for applications to the Council is the end of Sunday, 14 June 2020 and businesses can check the eligibility criteria and apply online via the DDC website at Daventry District Council’s Discretionary Grant Fund

DDC has already distributed £13.41m of Government funding to 1,138 local businesses during the coronavirus pandemic – including grants for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses, plus a series of small business rate relief grants.

Councillor Colin Morgan, Resource Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council said: “Our staff have been working hard to ensure that local businesses receive the Government funding support that they are entitled to during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“The Discretionary Grant Fund is aimed at those small businesses struggling significantly during these difficult times that aren’t eligible for the other government grant support schemes. I would urge any small local businesses who think they may qualify to visit our website to check the criteria and then apply online.”

Hagstone Pottery

We are always happy to post news of local businesses, so here is an update from local potter, Jacqueline Rappaport, whose Hagstone Pottery is now opening on Thursdays and  Fridays.

New Gallery & Studio Shop

Hagstone PotteryHagstone Pottery is opening a new gallery and studio shop in the grounds of Tews Farm, Woodford Halse, selling hand-made pottery “warm from the kiln” of Northamptonshire potter Jacqueline Rappaport.

Hagstone’s studio shop is opening due to popular demand from customers, following the tremendous success of previous studio sale weekends. The grounds around Tews Farm make Hagstone Pottery a lovely destination, and Jacqueline is usually happy to show customers around the workshop, where her pottery is made, sometimes even throwing in a little impromptu demonstration on the wheel!

Practical Pots

Employing traditional throwing skills, Jacqueline uses stoneware and porcelain clays, which she hand-glazes and then fires to very high temperatures in order to create pottery Hagstone Potswhich is beautiful but also very usable.

“I’m not interested in making ornaments,” states Jacqueline firmly, “I like to produce useful pots – pots which are happy in the microwave and the dishwasher – but which are also lovely to handle and which look beautiful on the shelf when they are not being used.

“I try to adhere as closely as possible to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement. In our disposable world where you can buy a dinner service for a tenner, more people are looking for objects with a bit more authenticity, something from the hand of the maker which is beautiful as well as useful”

Along with pots, Hagstone’s studio shop also sells hand-made ceramic and sterling-silver jewellery, linen and hemp scarves in “colours of clouds and sea”, plus exclusive limited-edition prints and cards.

Commissions are happily taken and a generously stocked seconds table is always very popular.

Find Out More?

Hagstone Pottery’s studio shop is open every Thursday and Friday from 10am to 4pm.

For more information and directions on how to get there visit

What is a Hagstone?

A Hagstone is a very hard, flinty stone which has a naturally occurring hole, formed over years and years, due the action of the crashing sea. In traditional folk-law, hag stones – also called fairy stones – offer protection from bad dreams and some say that if you look through the hole of a hag stone at certain times of the year, you will be able to see through it into the other world (wherever that might be!)

Paint N Powder

We’re always happy to add details of new businesses in Woodford and the surrounding area.

Here’s the latest to ask us to add their details to the Signpost.……..

Paint N Powder Services Limited

Powder coating is a high-quality finish found on thousands of products you come in contact with each day!  Powder coating protects the roughest, toughest machinery as well as the household items you depend on daily.  It provides a more durable finish than liquid paints can offer, while still providing an attractive finish.

Powder coated products are more resistant to diminished coating quality as a result of impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and other extreme weather conditions. In turn, this reduces the risk of scratches, chipping, abrasions, corrosion, fading, and other wear issues.

We offer a wide range of powder coating colours and finishes, using epoxy, epoxy polyester or polyester materials. It’s tough. It looks great. And it lasts a long, long time.  In addition to being durable, powder coating is an attractive choice due to environmental advantages. No matter which application process is utilized, powder coatings are easy to use, environmentally friendly, cost effective, and tough!

Typically any metal object that can hold the electrostatic charge needed to affix the sprayed powder and can tolerate the high heat levels of the curing process. Mild steel, galvanized and electroplated steel, aluminium, stainless steel and most other steel alloys can be powder coated.

Ads for Local Businesses

Although we have a directory of local business here on the Signpost and we provide village businesses with a way to reach out to local people, we don’t carry paid advertising on the Signpost.

A new initiative is offering local businesses a low-cost advertising medium delivered twice a year to homes and businesses, together with a bigger on-line directory than we offer here and a wider coverage area.

Based in Little Preston, The Rural Advertiser will offer low cost advertising in an A5 booklet distributed every six months and in an on-line directory.

The first booklet will be distributed in November, closing date for adverts 6th October.

Funds For Local Business

£5M Fund for Rural Firms in South East Midlands

Businesses across the South East Midlands have been invited to discover the details of a new funding scheme aimed at boosting employment and growth in rural areas.

Friday 3rd March 2017 from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) Growth Programme supports projects that invest in building businesses, creating new jobs and growing the economy in rural areas.

Locally, the calls have been developed in collaboration with the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) and will be open to support food processing, business development and tourism infrastructure projects across the private, public and voluntary sectors for an initial 12 month period.

More details of the funding programme, which will see £5million allocated locally, will be available at a workshop at Towcester Racecourse on March 3 – familiarising businesses with the calls and providing the opportunity to talk to members of the Rural Payments Agency team and representatives from SEMLEP.

The session on March 3 will feature presentations from Roger Allonby from the RDPE and Lisa King from the LEADER programme, alongside case studies from local businesses such as The Old Piggery B&B in Bedfordshire.

Workshops will be held to give more information about business development, food processing, tourism infrastructure and the LEADER programme while one-to-one surgeries will be available in the afternoon for projects that already have proposal ideas.

An Idea for Local Business?

Would the FSB Initiative Work Here?

Woodford is lucky to have the number and range of shops that we do but do we always take advantage of what they can offer? One thing is sure, without our custom they cannot survive and thrive.

The Federation of Small Businesses has come up with an idea in their Thames Valley region to promote spending with local businesses. They have challenged local people to record their local spending for the chance of winning a £250 prize. Do shoppers think something like this would be a good idea for Woodford? Do businesses think it might help, too?
