Parliament’s go-ahead for Northamptonshire’s new councils.
Voting on 7th May for councillors for the new authorities.
On February 14th, Parliament passed legislation to replace Northamptonshire’s eight existing councils with two new unitary authorities on 1 April 2021.
In this area, the new West Northamptonshire Council will serve Woodford cum Membris. West Northamptonshire Council will provide all of the services currently provided by Daventry District, Northampton County and South Northants District Council.
Now the legislation is approved, the next stage will be to set up a new “shadow” council to lead the work to create the new unitary authority. The same thing is happening in neighbouring North Northants.
Elections will take place on Thursday, 7 May 2020 when residents will be able to vote for the 93 councillors that will sit on the new West shadow council. These members will automatically become elected members of the new unitary authority from 1 April 2021. The shadow council will run alongside the county, district and boroughs until the existing councils are abolished on 1 April 2021.
Residents can find out how preparations are progressing and keep updated on the changes ahead on the Future Northants website.
