Comedy Night Kick-Starts Pool Fundraising for Woodford Halse Academy
A fundraising drive to raise £8K needed to keep open Woodford Halse Academy’s swimming pool has been kick-started by winning an amazing comedy night competition.
Flock comedy who run outstanding, ‘pop-up’ comedy clubs pledged to help a good cause raise dosh through the medium of laughter. The Academy was able to bag the prize by receiving the most votes to ‘Flock’s’ Facebook competition, as well as illustrating the worthiness of the cause through an online submission.
The Academy has struggled to open the pool in the last few years but in May 2016, parents of the school were informed that the Academy just didn’t have the funds to open the pool in the summer term, something the children look forward to every year. With the support of the parents, local people and businesses, an amazing £9000 was raised in just over 3 weeks. Thankfully, this meant the pool opened for the children to swim, giving them a chance to learn the vital life skill of swimming and they’ve had so much fun and enjoyment along the way.
Emma O’Hanlon, Chair of the Woodford Halse Academy Swimming Pool Committee (WHASP) said: “The support to get the pool open in the summer term was overwhelming, which has inspired us to now aim to get the pool open EVERY year without question. For this to happen, we need to raise £8,000 each year just to open it for one term, however, we have also set our sights on trying to get the pool open longer during the year by (possibly) getting it covered. We also want to be able to hire our pool out to local companies and other schools to generate additional income and of course revamp the pool with new changing rooms, new tiling and a general makeover.
Emma continues to say: “We are delighted to win the comedy night by Flock Comedy, which will be held on Friday 9th December at the Woodford Halse Social Club. It will be a fantastic evening and a great start to our 2016/2017 fundraising so please visit our FB page ( opens in a new windowWoodford Halse Academy Swimming Pool Fund) to purchase tickets.”
Mr Wills, Head Teacher of Woodford Halse Academy said: “The pool is a great asset to our school. All children aged 4 to 11 have swam three times a week in the summer term and will continue to swim weekly in September. We are very grateful to all the generous donations we have received so far and to now have the WHASP committee in place proactively caring for the swimming pools future is tremendous.”
