Your Cricket Club Needs You

It will soon be summer (Oh yes it will!), so why not think about getting involved with cricket in Woodford? John Ward, Secretary of the Woodford Halse Cricket Club has sent us this short article on the club….

To the best of my knowledge there has been a Cricket Club in the village since the mid-1800s when it would no doubt have been a Railwayman`s team. If anyone knows more I would love to hear from them! The cricket square itself was laid to a very high standard and I am led to believe the County 2nd XI played on it on more than one occasion. Again if anyone knows more, please let me know. Nowadays the Club is community based, but still clings to its Railway heritage with the front of a steam engine forming our logo.

Kwik CricketThe club has a thriving junior section which starts with Kwik Cricket (soft ball) right up to under 13 hard ball. As the youngsters develop over the next few years we hope to have an under 15 side to feed in to our senior teams.

The senior teams play on Saturday afternoons in the South Northants League running from the beginning of May to the end August. The “Seconds” play in Division 3, and its aims are to develop young players, create a “Club” culture, and enjoy cricket. The “Firsts” play in Division 1 which is obviously played more competitively. There is no doubt they will be close to gaining promotion again this season and look forward again to playing in the Premier Division where they belong.

We play in a few mid-week 20/20 cups and normally manage 3 or 4 Sunday Friendlies too.

We are also blessed with the use of a pavilion that has changing rooms and showers, and a bar that is open after all the games too! Indoor net practices for Juniors and Seniors have been booked in Daventry from March to May, and this year our new club Kit adorned with our club and sponsors logos will be available to purchase through the Serious Cricket website.

As with most cricket clubs in this day and age we are always on the lookout for new recruits of all ages and abilities, and in all areas of the Club. So if you are interested in playing, coaching, umpiring or scoring. Or just want to be involved for the “social”, you will be made very welcome.
